String Serenades, Volume 2: Josef Suk & Antonín Dvořák

by Anima Musicæ Chamber Orchestra

The 2nd part of our series features the string serenades of two Czech composers, Suk and Dvořák. Dvořák’s piece was written in only eleven days, and was premiered in 1876, to resounding acclaim. Dvořák was Suk’s teacher at the Prague Conservatory, and later Suk married his daughter, Otylka. His string serenade in 1892 immediately made a name for the composer; Johannes Brahms gave it particular praise, and urged the reputable Simrock to publish it.
